A SANCTUARY IN THE CITY
Midtown Modern’s architecture, driven by the fundamental goal of designing for people, creates a revitalizing environment that feels cocooned from the city. What is the Midtown Modern architectural concept? We wanted to explore how we could create an experience that invites people to live in the city while also creating a rejuvenating environment that feels cocooned from the city with Midtown Modern. That was our main obstacle.
What emotions do you hope the Midtown Modern experience will elicit?
Because we are designing homes for people to build their lives in, we hope to instill in residents a sense of warmth and intimacy, as if they were returning home to the comfortable companionship of a close friend. We chose concrete and brown masonry to create this sense of coziness, despite the fact that many people associate luxury with steel and glass. We’re creating a different kind of luxury with Midtown Modern, one that’s warmer and more comfortable, especially given how many people will live there.
Midtown Modern bears the ip:li signature in what way?
Midtown Modern, like all of my other projects, is motivated by the fundamental goal of designing for people first and foremost. This isn’t a revolutionary idea, but it’s a critical one. Architecture serves as a backdrop against which people’s lives unfold, as well as a site upon which they construct their history. It has to be user-friendly and livable.
As a designer, I’m always on the lookout for strong spaces that encourage people to fully embrace living in their own homes, rather than being hesitant to do so because it’s too immaculate or precious. With its rugged aesthetic, Midtown Modern exemplifies this. To some, it may appear Brutalist, but for me, it’s the tactility and toughness that I’m after, not the look.
Many of your designs have a timeless quality to them. How did you put this philosophy into practice with Midtown Modern?
It is not up to me to predict whether the design will be timeless, but I strive for it. Midtown Modern’s architecture is inspired by the brick buildings of Midtown districts in other cities such as New York and London. Brick is a material that stands the test of time, and we hope that many years from now, people will still look to Midtown Modern and find its qualities refreshing.
How does Midtown Modern draw inspiration from Martin Modern’s best features?
Martin Modern’s lush greenery and poetic spaces set it apart from other luxury residential developments, resulting in a contemporary expression of livable luxury. With the garden sanctuary that we’re creating here at Midtown Modern, we wanted to achieve something similar.
What does it mean to you to live well?
To me, living well entails surrounding oneself with the people and things one enjoys. You don’t have to live in a large space; you can live in a small space as long as it has interesting nooks and corners to enjoy. The great trap of modern life is the belief that more is better, but I believe that going back to basics is more wise.
Chia is a type of tea. Jul Partner at Ortus Design Midtown Modern… takes a daring approach to bringing nature into the city… a wilder, freer, and more authentic expression of nature.
What is your take on Midtown Modern landscape design?
We used a biophilic design approach to maximize residents’ connection to nature as much as possible. After many years of minimal green spaces in this neighborhood dominated by shophouse developments, the result is a naturalistic and organic landscape that invites nature back into the city center.
We will have a forested-themed garden on level three of Midtown Modern, as well as rooftop gardens on both towers. These gardens will cover an area of more than one hectare and feature 186 plant species.
What role do you see landscaping playing in contributing to residents’ sense of well-being?
We hope that by creating a botanic resort with a variety of textures and terrains, people will slow down and savor their experience of the landscape. Rustic gravel paths and boardwalks evoke a sense of adventure in the countryside.
We create moments for residents to let nature into their lives, allowing wellness to emerge at the forefront of their experience, with amenities purposefully woven in amongst the creeks and woods.
Given the abundance of greenery on the Garden Deck, how did Ortus shape the experience to be meaningful?
On Level 3, we used the concept of seasons to differentiate zones in the gardens. The Spring and Summer Woods have flowering plants and trees, while the Autumn Wood has plant varietals with orangey-red hues. Naturalistic landscape features like creeks and pools take you by surprise at every turn, bringing you moments of joy, excitement, interest, adventure, and relaxation.
The rooftop landscape appears to be quite distinct from the more verdant Green Deck. Please tell us more about it.
The Midtown Modern rooftops are inspired by karstic mountain peaks, which are more minimalist in nature. Low-lying rockscapes contrast with panoramic views of the city. In the midst of the stark poetry of rock forms, residents can find a moment of Zen. The Midtown Modern landscaping draws on an unusually wide range of natural landscapes from the ground level to the rooftop. Why is this the case?
These transitions in scenery, inspired by countryside resort villas, provide both interest and drama as one moves through the residence. The high ceilings and lighting on the ground level are grotto-like, while the third-story gardens are a lush forest. One ascends through these spaces to reach the rooftops’ mountain summit. What are some of the Midtown Modern landscaping’s distinguishing features that set it apart from other condominium developments?
The landscaping at Midtown Modern takes a bold approach to bringing nature into the city. We prefer a wilder, freer, and more authentic expression of nature, as opposed to the trimmed, manicured approach taken by most residential developments. The dense canopy of trees in the development is one major example of this – even at the lap pool, trees are planted close to the pool’s edge so that sunlight filters through the canopy of trees overhead and gives the impression of being ensconced in greenery on every inch of land.
The landscape design of Midtown Modern revolves around the concept of ‘Gardens in the Woods,’ which includes ten landscape settings with distinct textures and terrains. Using the metaphor of an upward exploration into the mountains, this retreat into nature takes you from the arrival deck’s cavern grotto to a lush plateau on the third storey, and finally to the mountain peak at the rooftops. A full suite of residential amenities transforms this green sanctuary into an idyllic playground for all in the midst of these verdant settings. Midtown Modern promises to surprise, delight, rejuvenate, and excite at every turn, from the garden to the Grand Lawn, the lap pool to the pavilion.
